Get It On Vinyl

Thursday, November 9, 2006

What do unicorns, beehive hairdos, strawberries and mountain ranges all have in common? They're all some of the unique designs you'll find on the accessories crafted by local artist Cheryl Chudyk and sold Canada-wide through her Stitchpixie label.

Out of brightly coloured pieces of vegan-friendly vinyl, Chudyk assembles simple, pop art-inspired images of whatever her imagination cooks up. Then she sticks them on her amazing change purses, wallets, pouches of all sizes, iPod cases and wristlets (small purses with an elastic that goes around your wrist so you don't have to put it down when you need both hands).

As her website testifies, Chudyk's imagination is one fertile landscape. Creations vary from eggs, steaks, cherries, ice cream, and sushi to nature-themed designs like autumn trees, crows, seagulls and dragonflies. Plus there are cityscapes, mod squares, cassette tapes, revolvers and the cutest monster pouch you'll ever see. It's almost a guarantee that you'll find something you love. And if you don't, send Chudyk an e-mail and she’ll work with you on a custom piece.

Check out her website, www.stitchpixie.com, so see all the fantastic creations. She makes wonderful jewellery, too. Earrings and necklaces in the shape of cat's eyes, grapes, eggplants, mahjong tiles and even bok choy.

You can buy any of the Stitchpixie goodies online. Or see them in person at the following downtown locations:

Ayden Gallery, 2103 - 88 West Pender (same building as Tinseltown)

Mala Kuja, 1067 Hamilton Street (jewellery only)

Dream, 311 West Cordova Street (vinyl accessories only)
