HOT PICKS [FRIDAY]

Georgia on My Mind

November 16, 2007

If you find this city’s signature fall colour of “grey” less than inspiring, a visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery will surely brighten your mood. Until Jan. 13, the VAG hosts a stunning collection of paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the major figures of 20th century American art. The exhibition focuses on the central theme of O’Keeffe’s work: transforming nature into abstraction. New Mexico, where O’Keeffe visited and revisited before finally moving there in 1949, is a dominant influence in her paintings, evidenced by the vari-coloured cliffs, dreamy desertscapes and sun bleached animal skulls that show up repeatedly in her work. These, along with images of giant flowers and rich sunsets, will have you yearning - if you aren’t already - for hotter climes and bluer skies.
