BRAND NEW [WEDNESDAY]

October 3, 2007

Film Fest is in town.  Don’t know about you, but we’re big fans.  This year’s fest holds some new surprises, including the launch of a new annual environmental VIFFfilm series called Climate for Change.

The Climate for Change series includes both dramatic features and documentaries and the emphasis is on fresh information and vision and of course, cinematic artistry.  Filmmakers were tempted to rustle up seriously fab features and docs by a $25,000 prize awarded to the filmmaker for the best environmental film.  This award is the biggest of the festival, offered up by Kyoto Planet, a new eco-conscious company that’s putting its money where its mouth is.

Check out some of the nominees:

The Green Chain – Seven inter-linked monologues from different perspectives on the logging industry: all will tempt you, but which makes most sense? – Oct. 8th & 10th.
Bing Ai – A film that took ten years to make details the life and love of a Chinese peasant who dares to defy the State. – Oct. 8th.
About Water – An Austrian doc that shows what life is like in places with too much, or too little, water. – Oct. 4th & 11th.
Khadak – A visually mesmerizing feature about a shaman whose gift is almost thwarted by coal mining and a major relocation. – Oct. 4th, 6th & 9th.
4 Elements – Fire, water, earth and air, as seen through the experiences of Siberian smokejumpers, Alaskan king crab fisherman, German miners and Russian cosmonauts. – Oct. 6th, 7th & 12th.
