BRAND NEW [WEDNESDAY]

Free Geek?

September 5, 2007

Need a computer, or know someone who does?  Have a computer that’s seen better days, and don’t know what to do with it?

Free GeekIntroducing Free Geek Community Technology Centre, a non-profit that opened earlier this year to “help the needy get nerdy” here in Vancouver.

These guys are the first of their kind in Canada.  They’ll take any and every old or broken computer component you’ve got kicking around your home or office to support their reuse and recycle program.

All it takes to get a ‘new’ computer from Free Geek is 24 volunteer hours, during which time you refurbish computers for people in need, and at the end of it, walk away with new skills and one of those computers for yourself.

Much of Free Geek’s mission is environmental.  They aim to cut the amount of hazardous electronic waste we North Americans export to developing countries. How comforting to know that all those old computer parts get put to good use, and not into a landfill?

What’s old is new again.
