VANCOUVER TRENDZ [THURSDAY]

Put the Pedal to the. . .Ground!

July 12, 2007

Now you can get where you’re going, exercise and laugh at traffic jams enroute! Car sharing has been a Vancouver staple for years, but now, a new, green, two-wheeled alternative has emerged. Vancity has introduced a free, bicycle-sharing network. So, grab your helmet and go!

change everythingForty-five, bright red bicycles are on the loose in our city, for everyone to use and pass along. It’s a first in Vancouver. It’s already proved successful in Europe, as well as Portland, Oregon. The program is being managed through www.ChangeEverything.ca, Vancity’s social networking site. Users can search for a blogger with one of the bikes and ask for a turn, or write a blog post of their own requesting a ride.

The program wraps up on September 7th, when everyone is asked to return the bikes. Vancity will then donate them to PEDAL, a local organization providing bicycles to low-income households.
