VANCOUVER TRENDZ [THURSDAY]

Not Just for Cowboys

July 5, 2007

Fashion works in cycles, but rarely without a twist. What’s cool to one generation is poison to another, before coming back again in a new way for a new crowd. The eighties saw many crimes against clothing, from shoulder pads to skinny ties. Thankfully, neither of these abominations have come back to haunt us (yet), but the lowly bandana is another matter entirely.

Though long since forgotten, the bandana is back and gracing the necks of the young and stylish.

Gay men were the first to bring back the trend, and it was a short trip from the West End to Main St, where fashionable hipsters were adding the bandana to their vintage, post-ironic wardrobes. The bandana hasn’t hit critical mass yet, but it’s only a matter of time before they start cropping up in Yaletown shops with designer logos attached.
