VANCOUVER TRENDZ [THURSDAY]

Art in a Pot

March 27, 2008

If for you “living art” conjures up images of live models posing as mannequins in store windows, consider opening your mind - and your doors - to the concept of using plants (“living”) as objects to beautify your home (“art”). And if you need a little creative direction, a visit to Kermodi will set you on the right path.

Oh, we know. You’ve got that creeping philodendron in the living room that’s sort of taken over the walls, and your English ivy is positively thriving in the yogurt tub on your kitchen windowsill. But they’re not particularly artful, are they? Consider, then, spicing up your bathroom with a Panda plant nestled in a blanket of smooth black stones in a lime-green tray, or beautify your bedroom with a spray of Green Tea spilling out of - naturally - a big old ceramic teacup. Better than a yogurt tub, no?

Now before you start complaining about your brown thumb, Kermodi sells several plants that, while exotic, are easy to grow, including the Asian Rose Tree and Japanese Fern Fan. And if, after all this, you finally agree that plants can be art, yet don’t want to get your hands dirty, check out Kermodi and just look around - it’s a gallery, too.

Kermodi Living Art is at 1889 Powell Street.

Hours: Thu 1-7, Fri 1-6, Sat 10-4, or by appointment: 604-630-3759.
