VANCOUVER TRENDZ [THURSDAY]

Shi's All That

March 1, 2007

In Chinese, "shi" means something close to "poetic expression." It's also the name of one of Vancouver's hottest jewellery design studios. And once you've glimpsed their gorgeous wares, it's easy to see just how well they've named themselves.

ShiCory Judge and Honor Cienska, the duo behind Shi, have taken a simple sounding concept and turned it into a collection of beautiful works of art. The idea? Fusing Asian-style textiles with glass. The result? A range of earrings, pendants, belts and cuffs in as many tones, shapes and styles as there are emotions in the human psyche. One day could call for a calming, tranquil blue blossom design. The next, perhaps a bold red dragon.

You'll notice we're not-so-subtly assuming you're going to end up owning more than one of these amazing pieces. Now you just need to know where to find them. They're available at the Vancouver Art Gallery store as well as numerous locations on Main Street and in Kitsilano. Go to their website for a complete list of stores, as well as a gallery. You can also order a custom-made piece in your favourite combination of brocade and shape.
