Where to get your bread buttered

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Does the smell of freshly baked bread remind you of your Mom’s kitchen?

The next best thing – or maybe even better? – is right around the corner. . . Freshly baked bread from the kitchen of Professional French Bakers at "A Bread Affair" on Denman. Never heard of it, you say? That’s because it’s only been open for 4 days. But somehow they’ve got this bread thing down pat already.

All their bread is 100% organic certified, hand made and baked in a stone oven imported from France in 1,000 pieces. Now, you may be asking, How the heck did they put that thing back together? Who knows, but thank goodness they did. . . because what comes out of it will bring you to your knees.

A few highlights – "French Country Mich", a bread made in the traditional way, using a 500 year old recipe, "Cranberry Semolina", "The One", a gorgeous French baguette, "Power Bread," which is filled with raisins and nuts, high in iron and protein, and delicious toasted for breakfast, "Rosemary Ciabatta", the list goes on and on.

Bread is made fresh twice daily. And the French bakers are the real deal. Straight from France, bringing their expertise to the surprise and delight of bellies everywhere. They also have an excellent Pastry Chef. We’re still dreaming about the chocolate and coconut cheesecake. What’s more, they stock great spreads, oils, vinegars, and coming soon, gourmet cheeses from Montreal.

Insider tip: go first thing or just after noon.

"A Bread Affair", 1114 Denman Street, 604-633-2341, open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.
